Need suggestions for the best lens to photograph wildlife?

I have a Canon Rebel 2000 EOS (the old school kind, 35mm), SLR. I want to be able to zoom in from long distances, anywhere from 30-75 yards. I am mainly interested in photographing birds of prey such as hawks as well as ordinary song birds. Any recommendations as to a good quality lens to buy and what kind would be appreciated. I know the telephoto lens shoots anywhere from 300-1200mm. Would a 60-300mm do the trick as well? I’m not terribly familiar with camera equipment despite having a beginner’s guide to photography.

Probaby the longer the better, but a 60 or 70 to 300mm would be a start. There are some 500mm or 800mm mirror lenses fairly cheap these days. Don’t forget a tripod, and I hope your hand is steady.
