Threatening collection letter on debt we don’t owe?
Received a collection letter today demanding payment for a debt we didn’t owe. We paid by check the day the service was received. (We had a baby, and a photography company took the newborn pictures).
First off, the check has cleared.
Second, we were only given 14 days to pay, instead of 30.
Third, because of a delay from them writing it up and mailing it out, we were really only given a 1-day notice to pay.
Four, the letter said that if we don’t pay, then our ability to use checks in the future would be in danger.
So, what are our rights? I’m calling them Monday morning, and I want to have all my ducks in a row when I get the highest-ranking peson there on the phone.
Call them ASAP, and tell them you paid by check and are getting a copy of the canceled check from the bank. Once you have it you will send them a copy of it to prove payment.
