Photography Exploration: Is it allowed to go into stores and photograph?
There are a few contemporary and modern furniture stores that I would like to photograph, but I’m not sure if that is allowed. I’m particularly interested in the angles and unique layouts, not a direct shot of the furniture itself. Just wondering…I know this may seem like a dumb question.
Also, will hotels allow you to go to their roof and photograph without renting a room? I would like a shot of the city buildings, etc.
For most stores that is a no-no! Technically the furniture displays are arranged by an interior decorator who doesn’t want his layout to be copied in any way. You are on PRIVATE property, and the store may kick you out, or at the very least jump on your case for taking photos. This happened to me back in the early 70′s here in the States… and in the Philippines about 5 years ago when I entered an SM mall. The guards stopped me when I took photos inside the common areas. I almost had $3,000 worth of photo equipment confiscated!! I was taken to the mall manager to get permission!! Don’t risk it! You might be able to get the store manager’s approval to do it, but don’t assume it’s okay beforehand!
No building manager will allow you on the roof of any building… Don’t happen! Liability issues! Where I worked until very recently was a 6 story building… and without exception, only maintainance personell were allowed on the roof! This is true even if you are renting office space in the building or are staying in a hotel room!! Some buildings have observation areas where you are usually free to take photos. Usually these areas are just below the roof or on one of the top floors.
