Books to help Start Photography !?

I need a little advice on how to start photography! I’ve looked into courses but as I travel for work will find it difficult to stick to a 1 day a week course as i may be out of the country! I’ve looked at private courses but to be honest as I have over 24 hrs spare time around the world would find it better to use this time to study! Can any one recommend any books to get? I’ve not had any experience before and need to go back to basics! ie Aperture, shutters etc!!! I’ve bee to the local book store but as there are so many I want a rough idea of which one will be the most help!

Reading books is ok, but you are only learning someone elses technique, then you become ‘blinkered’ to other styles.

I have learnt my photography by learning the very basics, and from reading magazines.
Digital Camera Magazine is a good monthly publication.
I am also a member of the totally free site http://www.redbubble.com/ which has helped improve my photography no end, as people on there are only to willing to help and give advice.
